Senior Jake Dersi carried the Longhorns with the his arm and with his bat, as the Longhorns mercy ruled the hapless Warriors 15-5 in six innings. It took Dersi a mere 50 pitches to shut down the Warriors for the first four innings of the game. He allowed only one base runner in the game—a leadoff infield single to start the game. CCS managed only one ball hit out of the infield off of Dersi—a fly out to right in the first.
Dersi’s game didn’t stop there. He reached on an infield single in the second, drilled an RBI triple over the right fielder’s head in the third, and finished his afternoon with an RBI single in the fourth.
Dersi was not the only hitter who had a great afternoon. Junior first baseman Tyler Cerny had three hits as well, scoring four runs, knocking in one, and scoring four times. Freshman Andrew O’Hara was two for four with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Eric Lewis had three hits—all singles—and a stolen base. Junior CJ Griffin reached base four times—two singles, two walks.
The games was over for all intents and purposes after the third inning when five hits converted to four runs and a 7-0 lead for the Longhorns. LW piled on four more in the fourth to extend the lead to 11-0. LW then gave it back by committing five errors—including three on outfielders--that led to five unearned runs off of the sophomore relief pitcher Eric Szczepinski. LW, however, responded with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to mercy rule the game.
