STATE --  The second day of the wrestling state tournament found the two Longhorn wrestlers needing to win their morning bout in order to reach the podium.
Junior Tim Mecklenburg faced Alan Hayhurst from Newcomerstown.  Mecklenburg started off strong with a quick first period takedown and ride-out.  In the second period Mecklenburg started in the down position, quickly escaped and got another takedown and ride-out to take a commanding 5-0 lead.  Hayhurst took down in the third period and was able to get an escape but Mecklenburg followed with a takedown and as time ran out, Hayhurst got an escape and takedown to make the final score 7-4 and earn Mecklenburg a spot on the podium.
Senior Jake DeLorge had to face Jesse Gross of Norwalk St. Paul, ranked seventh in the State Tournament Predictions Report.  Gross started out with a lot of movement and caught DeLorge quickly with a takedown.  DeLorge was able to get an escape to put the score at 2-1 Gross at the end of the first period.  Gross chose the down position to start the second period and DeLorge took advantage of this and locked up his favorite move, the cradle.  DeLorge was able to secure three back points and gave up an escape at the end of the period to take a 4-3 lead.  In the third period, DeLorge started in the down position and got an escape and held off Gross for a 5-3 win and a spot on the podium.
In the afternoon session Mecklenburg faced Matt Mangen from Versailles, ranked seventh in the STPR.  The first period saw Mecklenburg take several shots but was unable to score due to the front headlock of Mangen.  Both Coach Dave Ressler and D.J. Vondruska instructed the referees to watch for a choke hold by Mangen but no penalty point was given.  Mangen chose the down position in the second period and Mecklenburg rode very hard and Mangen was unable to escape.  In the third period Mecklenburg chose the down position and while trying to escape, Mangen dug his fingers into Mecklenburg’s right eye.  Injury time was called and a doctor came to the mat to assess the damage to Mecklenburg’s eye.  After using all the injury time it was determined that Mecklenburg could continue.  Despite the attack, no penalty was assessed to Mangen because the referee’s did not view the assault.  Coach Ressler warned the referee’s to keep watch for any other malicious behavior by Mangen.  Shortly after the restart Mecklenburg earned an escape and shot in on a single leg.  Mangen once again was able to stop the shot with a front headlock but this time was caught with the illegal choke hold and Mecklenburg was awarded a penalty point.  Mecklenburg stayed on the offensive the rest of the period and won the 2-0 decision to advance to the consolation semi-final match.
The consolation quarterfinal match for DeLorge was less dramatic.  DeLorge faced Austin Siemon of Cincinnati Deer Park, ranked fourth in the STPR.  DeLorge secured a takedown in the first period but could not ride out Siemon, who escaped fairly quickly.  Leading 2-1 going into the second period, DeLorge took down and was able to get a reversal.  Siemon got another escape and the score was 4-2 going into the third period.  In the third, Siemon got a reversal of his own about a minute in to tie the score but DeLorge quickly got the escape to lead 5-4 with about 30 seconds left.  DeLorge kept on the offensive and advanced to the consolation semi-final on day three.  “I am very pleased with how both Tim and Jake wrestled today,” stated Coach Ressler.  “It is great to have two guys on the podium.”
After day two, Lutheran West jumped to the 28th spot in the standings with 13 points.
