STATE --  The consolation semi-final round determines whether a wrestler will be wrestling in the finals for third or fifth place.  Both junior Tim Mecklenburg and senior Jake DeLorge had advanced to the consolation semi-final by winning three straight matches after a first round loss.
Mecklenburg faced Caleb Ohl from Newark Catholic, ranked third in the State Tournament Predictions Report.  The two wrestlers were even through the first two periods.  Ohl had chosen the down position in the second and Mecklenburg came close to turning Ohl for back points but was able to ride Ohl out and prevent an escape.  In the third period Mecklenburg chose down and was able to escape. Mecklenburg shot in and secured a takedown and put in a half-nelson, turned Ohl and got the pin at 4:31 in the third period.  The win advanced Mecklenburg to the third place finals.
DeLorge found himself facing Dakota Mays of Nelsonville-York, the second ranked wrestler in the weight class in the STPR.  Both Mays and DeLorge were evenly matched.  Neither could score a takedown in the first period.  DeLorge was able to ride out Mays in the second period but Mays was able to ride out DeLorge in the third.  The bout was sent into sudden victory overtime with a 0-0 tie.  DeLorge went right on the offensive in the overtime and used a slide-by to bring Mays to the mat. Just as he was securing the takedown, Mays hipped over and the two wrestlers ended in a scramble for position.  Mays came out of the scramble on top and got the overtime win.  The 2-0 overtime loss pushed DeLorge into the fifth place finals.  At this point in the standings, Lutheran West had jumped up to a tie for twentieth place with 20 team points.
In the finals Mecklenburg faced Devon Dunbar from Northwood, ranked twelfth in the STPR at 120.  Mecklenburg shot in on Dunbar’s leg but could not finish the takedown.  At one point in the scramble Mecklenburg had locked up a cradle and had Dunbar on his back.  Both Coach Dave Ressler and DJ Vondruska were yelling for the points to be awarded but Dunbar was able to roll through and come out on top for the first period takedown and a 2-0 lead.  Mecklenburg chose down in the second period and reversed Dunbar to tie the match.  Dunbar was able to escape before the period was done and held a 3-2 lead going into the third period.  Dunbar chose down and was able to escape and hold off Mecklenburg’s takedown attempts to win 4-2.  Mecklenburg finished the year with a 26-8 record and a fourth place finish at the state tournament.
DeLorge had a rematch in the finals of his district semi-final match with Dakota Stanley of Waynedale.  Stanley was ranked third in the STPR and had defeated DeLorge 7-1 at the district tournament.  Stanley secured a first period takedown and ride out to take a 2-0 lead.  In the second period, Stanley chose down and got an escape for a 3-0 lead going into the third period.  DeLorge chose down and surprised Stanley with a quick reversal and came close several times to locking up his cradle.  Stanley escaped and scored a takedown at the end of the period to win 6-2.  DeLorge finished with a 50-8 record and a sixth place finish at the state tournament.
Coach Ressler was very pleased with both Mecklenburg and DeLorge’s performances at the tournament.  “Tim and Jake did a tremendous job this weekend.  They wrestled so well, being able to bounce back and place as high as they did after a first round loss is amazing.”  The team finished tied for 23rd place, the highest place finish in school history.  The 20 team points tied the 2008 team for most points scored in the state tournament.
