STATE --  Lutheran West wrestlers junior Tim Mecklenburg and senior Jake DeLorge both lost close first round matches at the 77th annual State Wrestling Tournament on Thursday, February 27. DeLorge was making his first trip to the state tournament, while this was the second trip for Mecklenburg, who went 0-2 as a freshman.
Mecklenburg fell 8-5 to Noah Mattin of Delta, ranked fourth in the State Tournament Predictions Report.  Mecklenburg gave up a takedown and two back points at the end of the first period and it was just too much to overcome.  Mattin took down in the second period and Mecklenburg rode tough on top but gave up an escape to go down 5-0.  Mecklenburg finished the third period with an escape, a reversal and a takedown but gave up an escape and a takedown to put the final at 8-5 Mattin.
DeLorge was able to score a quick takedown on Anthony Decarlo from Springfield Central Catholic in the first period.  Decarlo, ranked twelfth in the STPR, was able to escape right away and then added two takedowns to take a 5-3 lead at the end of the first period.  The second period found DeLorge once again getting the first takedown but Decarlo answered back with two of his own to take an 11-6 lead going into the third period.  In the third period DeLorge was only able to get two escapes while giving up two takedowns to lose 15-8.
The first round of consolation matches found the two Longhorn wrestlers needing to win in order to advance to the second day of the state tournament.  Mecklenburg’s second match was against Josh Clary of Dayton Christian.  Right off the whistle, Mecklenburg secured a takedown and came close to back points several times in the short one minute period.  Choosing bottom in the second period, Mecklenburg got a quick escape and a takedown to take a 5-0 lead into the third period.  Wrestling very smart in the third period, Mecklenburg gave up an escape but secured two takedowns to win by major decision 9-1.
DeLorge faced Lincoln Parsley of Archbold in the first consolation round.  DeLorge controlled the entire match, racking up three takedowns and giving up three escapes and two stalling points to win 7-5 and advance with Mecklenburg to the second day.
The team was tied for 41st place at the end of day one with three team points.  Coach Dave Ressler was excited to have two wrestlers advancing to the second day. “I am very happy for both Tim and Jake.  They’ve worked really hard to get here and it would have been a big disappointment if they had not advanced.  Now they will have a chance to get on the podium with another win tomorrow.”
