CARDINAL INVITATIONAL --
The Longhorn wrestlers had a very good showing at the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday. Due to sickness and injury only 11 starters were available for the Longhorns. Yet out of those eleven, eight placed in the tournament. Winning championships for Lutheran West were sophomore Tim Mecklenburg (120) and senior Andrew Liese (182). Mecklenburg has won the tournament two years in a row. Placing second for the Longhorns were freshmen Kevin Naim (126) and Adler Vasiloff (132), senior Chance Huey (138) and junior Ian Long (285). Sophomores Kristian Bremer (220) and Ryan Moore (152) placed third.

Moore started out the tournament for the Longhorns with a 5-4 win in the rat tail round.  Freshman Dominic Montes (195) was also in the rat tail round in his first wrestling tournament as a non-scorer.  Montes lost by pin in the first period to the Painesville Harvey starter.  The rest of the Longhorn wrestlers had matches in the first round.

Mecklenburg won his quarter-final bout with a 31 second pin.  Also winning for the Longhorns in the quarter-finals were Vasiloff, Huey and sophomore Jon Handwerk (145).  Advancing to the semi-final round with a bye were Naim, Bremer and Long.

In the semi-finals Mecklenburg was able to pin his opponent in the second period and advance to the finals.  Naim won his semi-final match 11-2, Vasiloff pinned his opponent in the second period, Huey pinned his opponent in 38 seconds and Long also advanced to the finals with a second period pin.  Moore, Bremer and Handwerk lost in the semi-final round.  Moore and Bremer bounced back with wins in the consolation round to advance to the third place finals.

Mecklenburg had the first match in the finals and after taking a 4-2 lead into the second period he was able to secure a takedown and pin in the second period to win his second straight Cardinal Invitational Championship.  Naim followed Mecklenburg in the finals and had a hard fought bout with the Cardinal wrestler but ended up losing 6-2.  Huey had a final rematch against Travis Pelles from Grand Valley.  They squared off in last year’s final.  Unfortunately the outcome was the same for Huey as he lost an 8-2 decision.

Since Moore was in a rat tail round he had already wrestled the maximum of five times going into the third place final bout.  Both Moore and his opponent received the third place award without wrestling the match.  Bremer had a great match against Rhoades from Painesville Harvey for third with Bremer coming out on top 5-4.

The final bout of the day was the heavyweight match between Long and Takacs of Grand Valley.  Near the end of the first period Long got in deep on a double leg and lifted Takacs up for what looked to be a takedown but the referee called an illegal slam and awarded Takacs with a penalty point.  The coin flip for the second period went to Takacs and he chose the down position.  Long was unable to break Takacs down and in a scramble Long was put on his back and pinned.

“I was very pleased with the way we wrestled today”, stated Coach Ressler.  “We have some things to work on but overall the guys who were here performed well.”  The team will now prepare for their home double dual on Thursday against St. Edward Green, Mentor Gray and Willoughby South Blue.
