DISTRICT @ GARFIELD HEIGHTS --
Five Lutheran West wrestlers traveled to Garfield Heights for the Division III District Tournament on Friday and Saturday.  The West district qualifiers were freshman Tim Mecklenburg (106), junior Bryce Deblock (113), senior Ryan Rusnak (126), junior Chance Huey (138) and junior Andrew Liese (160).  The Longhorns had drawn some very tough first round match-ups, all five of their first round opponents ended up being district placers with four of them going on to qualify for the state tournament.  All five Longhorns dropped their first bouts with Mecklenburg having the closest match, losing 9-8.
The first round of consolation found Mecklenburg, Huey and Liese all getting wins with Deblock and Rusnak bowing out of the tournament.  Mecklenburg got a quick 24 second pin of his Liberty opponent.  Huey toughed out a 1-0 victory by riding out his Pymatuning Valley opponent.  After a first period takedown and a second period escape, Liese hit the patented LW mediator to get a second period pin of his Ledgemont opponent.
Saturday morning started with the second round of consolation bouts for Mecklenburg, Huey and Liese.  Mecklenburg got down 3-1 in his bout with Young from Northwestern but was able to get a reversal and 3-near fall to pull out a 6-4 victory to advance.  Huey was down 1-0 in the second period when he got caught and pinned ending his season.  Liese was down 15-3 in the third period when he put his Tuslaw opponent to his back and nearly got the pin but time ran out and he lost 15-8.
The consolation quarter-finals saw Mecklenburg face MacCartney from Grand Valley for the second time this season.  Mecklenburg had pinned MacCartney in the Cardinal Tournament finals in December.  This time the result was the same, after going up 11-0, Mecklenburg got the fall to advance to the consolation semi-final.
The consolation semi-final for Mecklenburg was a rematch of his first round bout with Tschiegg from Orrville.  This time Mecklenburg was ready and built up a 6-0 lead after the first period.  He added seven more points in the second period and chose top in the third and got the final four points to end the match with a 15-0 technical fall and advance to the 3rd place finals and state qualification.
In the finals, Mecklenburg faced Ullman of Loudonville, who won his semi-final match 2-0.  Ullman was able to get a first period takedown to take a 2-0 lead going into the second period.  Mecklenburg tied it at two with a takedown of his own in the second period.  In the third Mecklenburg was awarded a penalty point and earned an escape to take a 4-2 lead with 30 seconds left in the match.  With 13 seconds left Ullman was able to get a takedown to tie the score and send it into overtime.  In the overtime, Ullman got in on a single leg and at the edge of the mat score the winning takedown.
While Mecklenburg settled for fourth place, he did become only the second Longhorn freshman to qualify for the state tournament.  Mecklenburg will face Zon Fields from Marion Pleasant on Thursday at 3pm on mat 8 at the State Tournament.  Updated results from the state tournament can be found at www.ohsaa.org.
Coach Dave Ressler was very pleased with his team’s performance.  “We return everyone except Ryan”, stated Ressler.  “They all gained some valuable experience this weekend and Tim’s run for state was unbelievable.  That is one of the hardest things to do (come back to qualify after losing first round).”
