The Lutheran West Longhorn Wrestlers successfully defended their title for their third consecutive Longhorn SuperQuad Championship on Saturday.  Lutheran West went 5-0, and conference rivals Clearview and Brooklyn finished 4-1.  Clearview took the runner-up trophy by defeating Brooklyn in the third round 45-36.
Lutheran West took on West Geauga B in the first round and soundly defeated the Wolverines with four pins, a major decision, and seven forfeits.  Freshmen Tim Mecklenburg, Carter Deblock and Kristian Bremer got their first high school wins and pins in the match.  Senior captain Ryan Rusnak also recorded a pin.  Junior Izaak Zrnich recorded the major decision 10-2.  The Longhorns defeated West Geauga 69-6.
The second round found the Longhorn grapplers facing Elyria Catholic.  The Longhorns were led by Mecklenburg, Rusnak, Zrnich and junior captain Andrew Liese with pins.  Also winning for the Longhorns was freshman Justin Watson, who recorded a 24-9 technical fall in the third period.  The Longhorns also received 4 forfeits to win 53-22.
In the third round Lutheran West squared off against Chagrin Falls.  On their way to another 69 points the Longhorns recorded seven pins out of the nine contested matches.  Falls were recorded by Mecklenburg, junior captain Bryce Deblock, C. Deblock, Rusnak, Zrnich, junior Chance Huey and junior C.J. McNamee.  Also winning for the Longhorns was Gabriel Petkac at195 pounds, 1-0.  The final score was Lutheran West 69 and Chagrin Falls 3.
The fourth round found the Longhorn wrestlers facing Lincoln West.  Lutheran West received seven forfeits from Lincoln West but also got four pins from Mecklenburg, Rusnak, Zrnich and Petkac.  The Longhorns ran away with the match 70-12.
The final round of the day saw the Longhorns going up against Twinsburg B.  Coach Dave Ressler knew coming in that this was going to be the toughest match of the day.  A loss would put the Longhorns in a four-way tie for first.  “We knew that Twinsburg was going to be tough to beat because not only are they a quality program but they have a lot of depth on their team”, stated Ressler.  The match did not start off well for the Longhorns when Rusnak gave up five near-fall points in the second period and ended up losing 9-7.  Zrnich got the Longhorns even with a last second escape to win 8-7 and knot up the team score at 3.  Huey followed with an intense 2-1 double overtime win to give the Longhorns a 6-3 lead.  Junior Gevin Maxwell drop a 17-2 technical fall and McNamee fell 8-0 to put the Longhorns down 12-6.  Freshman Ryan Moore filled in at 170 lbs. but could not hold off the Twinsburg wrestler and got pinned, putting the Longhorns down 18-6.
Liese got the Longhorns back on board with a third period pin.  “We knew we needed every bonus point possible and Andrew did a tremendous job getting the pin.  He was up 12-0 and they took the top position to start the third period.  He had to get a reversal and pin.  If he had escaped and then got the takedown it would’ve been a tech fall and we would have lost the match by one point”, stated assistant coach D.J. Vondruska.  The teams traded forfeits at 220 and heavyweight.  Mecklenburg and B. Deblock got pins at 106 and 113, but Twinsburg got pins at 120 and 126 to tie the match at 36.  The referee’s huddled to determine the winner.  It came down to the fifth tiebreaker to give the Longhorns the win and the outright Longhorn SuperQuad Championship.
