The Lutheran West Wrestling Team started the season off by wrestling in front of the entire student body at an afternoon assembly on Friday, December 2.  The band was playing and the cheerleaders led the crowd into a loud cheer as the host Longhorns took the mat.  The home crowd never let up in their cheering which gave great support to the Longhorn wrestlers.  The match started at the 106 pound weight class.  Coach Dave Ressler sent out freshman Tim Mecklenburg to face Fairview senior Matt Wallace.  Mecklenburg kept the crowd cheering by securing a quick takedown and pin at the 1:20 mark of the first period.  Ressler then sent out backup 106 lb. freshman Elijah Mooneyham to face Fairview’s freshman starter at 113 lbs.  Mooneyham sent the match into overtime with a reversal in the third period.  In overtime the Fairview wrestler was able to get a takedown to take the 6-4 win.
Junior captain Bryce Deblock came back with a first period pin at the 120 lb. weight class to put the Longhorns up 12-3.  Deblock’ s freshman brother Carter Deblock came out for the Longhorns at 126 and put up a good fight against junior Ben Kost from Fairview.  Kost took the decision 7-3 to cut the Longhorn lead to 12-6.   Senior captain Ryan Rusnak extended the Longhorn lead with another Longhorn first period pin to put the Longhorns up 18-6.  Junior Izaak Zrnich had a tough match with Fairview’s senior at 138 lbs.  Zrnich gave up a late third period escape to lose 3-2.  Junior Chance Huey put the Longhorns back in the win column with another first period pin to put the Longhorns up 24-9.  Junior Gevin Maxwell received a forfeit at 152 and then junior C.J McNamee lost a hard fought decision 9-6.  The score now stood at 30-16.  At 182 lbs. junior captain Andrew Liese gave up a takedown at the end of the third period to lose 8-6 and Fairview closed the gap to 30-19.  Senior Gabriel Petkac’s match went into overtime and once again the Longhorn wrestler came up short in overtime 4-2.  The final match saw freshman Kristian Bremer receive a forfeit at 220 lbs. and the Longhorns got the 36-22 win over their crosstown rivals.
Coach Ressler was very pleased with the outcome. “It could have easily finish 42-16 had a couple of matches gone our way.  I’m very pleased with the way our guys wrestled today.  It was so great to have the gym packed with our fans.  They made a huge difference in the match.  That is the loudest I’ve heard our crowd in a long time.  It really pumped up our wrestlers and they came through.”
