The Lutheran West Wrestling Team was a little beat up after the Midview match so Coach Dave Ressler only took five varsity wrestlers to compete in the Cardinal Tournament.  The five wrestlers made the most of it as all of them placed in the top three in their weight classes.  Freshman Tim Mecklenburg only got two matches but pinned both of his opponents to take the 106 lb. championship.  “Tim wrestled a senior district qualifier in the final but went right after him and controlled the entire match,” stated Coach Ressler.
Junior captain Bryce Deblock placed third at 113 lbs.  Deblock pinned his first opponent and then in the semifinal match got caught in the third period and pinned.  Deblock rebounded strongly in the third place final to pin the number one seeded wrestler.
Senior captain Ryan Rusnak placed second at 126 lbs.  Rusnak won by major decision 10-0 in his first match and then had a wild semifinal match.  Rusnak scored ten first period points with several near-falls but gave up a reversal and back points to have only a four point lead at the end of the first period.  In the second period Rusnak was even with his opponent, each scoring five more points.  Rusnak then put the match away in the third period outscoring his opponent 6-3 to get the 21-14 decision.  In the finals Rusnak took on the number one seed but could not overcome the quickness and strength of his opponent and had to settle for runner-up honors.
Junior Chance Huey also finished as runner-up in the 138 lb. weight class.  Huey pinned both of his first two opponents to reach the finals match.  In the finals Huey’s opponent was able to secure a takedown in the first and second periods to take a 4-2 lead.  Huey came back to secure a takedown in the third and then let his opponent out to try and get another takedown to tie the score but was unsuccessful and lost 6-4 to take second place.
Junior Gevin Maxwell had a breakout tournament.  Maxwell pinned his first opponent in the second period to be the fifth Longhorn to reach the semifinals.  In the semifinal match Maxwell squared off against the number one seed and eventual champion.  Maxwell hung tough losing 16-5.  In the consolation round Maxwell bounced back with a third period pin to put him in the third place match.  Maxwell took advantage of having the top position in the second period and was able to turn his opponent over for the fall.
“Overall it couldn’t have gone much better,” commented Ressler.  “We set a goal of having all five guys place and they achieved that goal.”
