The Longhorns traveled to Brookside to take on the Clippers of Clearview in a battle of unbeaten Stripes Division teams.  Both teams came in to the match at 4-0 in the Stripes Division of the PAC-12, with the winner taking home the Division Championship.  The match started at the 160lb weight class.  Coach Dave Ressler would’ve rather have it start at the light weights where the team’s strength lies.  “We knew Clearview was going to be strong in the heavier weights and that could provide momentum for them,” said Ressler after the match.  Freshman Ryan Moore took up the challenge at 160 but could not hold off the older and stronger Clearview wrestler.  Clearview picked up 5 team points for the 17-2 technical fall at 160.  Junior captain Andrew Liese got the points right back for the Longhorns with a 23-8 technical fall at 170lbs.
One of the tossup matches in the dual was at 182 where senior Gabriel Petkac was looking to give the Longhorns the lead.  After a scoreless first period, Petkac struck first with a reversal and three back points.  It seemed that Petkac had his opponent pinned several times but did not get the call from the referee.  Unfortunately the Clearview wrestler was able to work out of the pinning situation and in a scramble Petkac hyperextended his knee.  The Clearview wrestler took advantage of Petkac’s injury and got a takedown and pin.  “That was a huge loss for us. We went to having the pin to getting pinned”, said Ressler.  The pin gave the Clippers an 11-5 lead.
The Clippers then ran off 18 more points with a forfeit and two pins in the three heavyweight classes.  The Longhorns got back on the board with a forfeit at 106, a pin by freshman Tim Mecklenburg and a pin by junior captain Bryce Deblock at 120lbs.  The Longhorns were now down 29-23.  Like 182, the 126 match was going to be a key match for both teams.  Senior Ryan Rusnak was taking on Clearview best wrestler, Mike Hollingsworth.  Unfortunately for the Longhorns, Hollingsworth caught Rusnak with a takedown to his back for a first period pin.  The Longhorns then forfeited at 132 which gave the Clippers a 41-23 lead.  At this point with three matches left the Longhorns needed three straight pins to cause a tie.
They got the first one right away with a first period pin by junior Chance Huey at 138lbs.  Junior Gevin Maxwell had a tough match at 145.  With the score at 4-2 going into the third period, Maxwell chose the down position and tried to get a reversal but was caught and pinned which sealed the conference title for Clearview.
The Longhorns finished the dual with a pin by junior C.J. McNamee at 152lbs to come up one match short of a tie.  “We wrestled well but the three matches (126, 145 and 182) that we got pinned at were the difference.  Clearview has a very good team, it was a fun and exciting match,” said Ressler.
