ROCKY RIVER --  In their first game of the season, the Lutheran West women’s basketball team lost to a stronger and more experienced Independence team 57-31.

The night started on a low with junior post Gabby Schultz getting hurt during warm-ups. The first quarter was disappointing as the Longhorns showed little offense resulting in the score of 21-3 at the end of the first quarter.

The Longhorns were falling behind and found themselves in a deep hole.Turnovers hurt the Longhorns in the first half. With Independence possessing the ball for the majority of the time, the Longhorns couldn't get anything going offensively.

Rebounding was low for the Longhorns while the Blue Devils capitalized on them with two players in double digits with 18 and 16 points.

At halftime the score was 37-13. LW came out in the second half ready to fight back.  By the end of the game, the amount of hustle had increased and the Longhorns were now starting to look awake. They began to be patient, reverse the ball on offense and drive the ball to the hoop.

Defense even got better as the game went on. Senior post Carey Smith got a fast break which contributed three more points with a lay-up and a free throw. It was too little too late, though, as the Independence Blue Devils defeated the Longhorns 57-31
