ROCKY RIVER --  In a thrilling finish, the Lutheran West men’s basketball team won at least a share of the PAC-12 Stripes Division, 2013-2014 title. The Longhorns held onto the lead with 3.0 seconds left on the clock after a fight struck out and came out with a 54-51.

After a fast start for LW in which they gained a 14-4 lead after one quarter of play, the game came down to the last minutes of play, even more so in those three remaining seconds.

Lutheran West stepped up on defense in the final 16 seconds and forced the Raider’s Jay Banyasz into a turnover instead of taking a shot and sat on the ball as the clock ran out. After a long conference, the referees decided that someone on LW’s team had called a timeout. Three seconds were put back onto the clock and senior Greg Kunze put the game away with a free throw.

After gaining an early lead, the Longhorns started to feel comfortable. However, Columbia started to come to life and take the momentum. They worked to cut the lead over the next four quarters and put the ‘Horns into a tough position for the last couple of minutes of play.

In fact, over the next three quarters, the Raiders outscored Lutheran West in each one, but they had dug themselves too deep a hole. In addition, the ‘Horns were able to hold on just enough and squeak out the victory.

Junior Andrew O’Hara came up big for West, especially in the fourth quarter. O’Hara took over and scored 10 of the Longhorns’ 18 fourth quarter points and finished with 17.

Overall, this game was one of the best efforts for Lutheran West all season. They played well on both sides of the ball and persevered to win. They were consistent in their play and shot the ball well, which is something that doesn’t always come together with this team. In addition, LW played together, which gave them the heart and intensity that they needed in this big game.

Greg Kunze led the Longhorns with 18 points, including three 3-point shots.  Senior Aaron Beckman was the final West player in double digits with 11.
