ROCKY RIVER --  Four Longhorns scored in double digits as the Lutheran West men’s varsity basketball team won their home opener against Orange 71-66.

LW started the second half down 35-30. They started the game slowly, being outscored 17-12 in the first quarter and tying Orange with 18 points in the second quarter to keep within five.

The Longhorns exploded in the third quarter on both offense and defense. The offense picked up and scored 22 points. LW also stepped up their pressure on defense to hold Orange to only 11 points in the third quarter. They forced turnovers and kept the Lions’ offense in check.

While the Lions outscored the Longhorns 20-19 in the fourth quarter, West’s tremendous third quarter allowed them to pull out the victory.

Lutheran West played a good, clean game and kept their turnovers to only eight, something they struggled with last season. They also took advantage of Orange’s weaknesses, which included driving the ball and pressuring their shooters.

Senior Greg Kunze had 18 points for LW and junior Clay Carper added 17 points.  Seniors Max Quinn and Chris Scott were the other two Longhorns in double digits, with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Lutheran West is now 2-0 on their season and 1-0 in the PAC-12. Their next game will be a test for their season as they host a hot Keystone team
