OPEN DOOR --  The Longhorns shot for just 26 percent from the field in their 49-35 non-conference victory over Open Door.

In the first quarter, Lutheran West looked as if they would have no difficulties at all during this game and that they would be breaking some records. The ‘Horns scored the first 18 points of the game and defensively held Open Door scoreless for 6:23 of the game. After that hot start, LW started to falter and shot just 18 percent (10 of 55) over the next three quarters.

The team made up for their lack of offense by playing a tough defense that forced 28 turnovers and held their opponents to 26 percent shooting.

Coach Alan Januzzi said, “We were playing great defense and getting good looks at the basket all night, we just weren’t putting the ball in the basket. When you can’t put the ball in and you still come away with a win on the road, you have to be pleased.”

The Longhorns had strong performances from senior Greg Kunze and junior Andrew O’Hara who each had 11 points.

O’Hara commented, “Every game we try to make our defense create our offense, and we did a pretty good job of that tonight. When we got up 18-0 we got a little big-headed and let them back in the game. We missed a lot of easy shots. But we still found a way to pull the game out.”

Lutheran West’s performance, although not one of their best of the season, was still impressive. To be able to win while they were struggling offensively is a big feat. The team displayed their ability to persevere and maintain a lead late in the game when the other team is making a comeback; LW responded well to the situation they found themselves in and can learn from experience.

West is now 10-2 on the season and 7-1 in conference play. They return home on Tuesday night with another non-conference match-up versus Trinity.
