PERRY --
Lutheran West’s season began as many expected, falling to the Perry, a strong Division I school in Massillon. While the differential in the final score of 84-50 is large, few expected Lutheran West to be close by the game’s conclusion.
Even though the final spread was large, there were several things that Longhorn fans can feel good about that happened Friday night. First, senior Dan Hillenbrand made his return to the court. Hillenbrand, who averaged 14.5 points per game in conference play last year, injured his knee during the second half of the football season this year. Hillenbrand, who played limited minutes Friday, had 13 points.
Secondly, Lutheran West had only 11 turnovers in the first half and was within 10 points at halftime. Sure, LW struggled in the third quarter shooting only 2 of 15 from the floor, but fans should be pleased with the fact that they were within ten points of the 2011-12 Federal League (sporting the likes of Canton McKinley, Glen Oak, and Hoover) after one half of basketball. Perry returned their number one scorer from the 2011-12 teams as well.
