ROCKY RIVER --
Lutheran West lost a tough game last night, playing arguably their best game in the second half of the season and losing to conference champion Oberlin in overtime. Oberlin, clearly the superior team in size and athletic ability, struggled all night to score against the LW defense. They did not struggle to rebound the ball, but only managed to overcome the Longhorns in the final seconds.
The game came down to a controversial series of events in the final seconds of regulation. After senior Shane Elkins tied the game at 54 with a field goal with 1:03 left in the game, LW got a defensive stop and brought the ball down intending to hold the ball for the last shot. At 10.9 seconds, however, senior Ricky Downer was fouled and went to the line to shoot two shots. After hitting the first, he missed the second providing the Phoenix with an opportunity to win the game.
Oberlin rushed down the floor and threw up a shot with about five seconds left. It appeared the Downer grabbed the rebound but somehow the ball ended up in an Oberlin player’s hands. The subsequent shot was also missed, but the rebound to that second shot was grabbed by Oberlin’s Jason Moore. Moore immediately shot the ball for the third shot attempt by Oberlin in the possession, and missed it as well, but before the buzzer would sound, the clock was stopped at 0.7 seconds as a foul was called on Downer for Moore’s final attempt. Moore went to the line, missed the first, but connected on the second to send the game to overtime.
Overtime was not kind to the underdog Longhorns, as they were outscored 8-2 in the extra frame and 6-0 in the final 1:06.
LW led at the half by six, 27-21, but started the third quarter by quickly giving up the lead. Oberlin led 30-29 with 5:39 left in the third. From there it was back and forth until LW put together a 17-5 run over 5:33 seconds to end the third quarter and start the fourth to give LW a lead at 49-41 with 5:18 left in the game. Oberlin answered with an 11-1 run of their own to give them the lead and put the game at 54-52 with 1:55 to play.
Elkins led the team with 16 points. Downer had 11. Junior Dan Hillenbrand, saddled with foul trouble for most of the game, finished the night with 12—all in the second half. Oberlin’s Moore ended the night with a game high 21, scoring all of them in the fourth quarter and overtime.
