ROCKY RIVER --
The Lutheran West Men’s Basketball 2011-2012 season began with a loss to an evenly matched Cuyahoga Heights team. Each team had their good and bad moments, but it was the Redskins who edged out the Longhorns in the fourth quarter, winning by an amount not indicative of the tightness of the game.
Much of the game was close in score; the Longhorns trailed much of the first quarter, but gained the momentum as time expired and junior Chris Ranc hit a 3-pointer that put West ahead by three. This energy carried into the second quarter and LW was able to take a three point lead into halftime.
The Longhorns, however, were not able to carry the momentum into the second half.  Cuyahoga Heights came out rejuvenated and stepped up their half-court defense, holding the Longhorns to only six field goals in the entire second half. The Redskins built off their defense and drove the ball in the paint to outscore West 24-10 in the fourth quarter.
The Longhorns put up a good fight in their first game of the season and had spurts of good play.  LW also showed the depth of their bench and the aggressive defense that looks to be the hallmark of this year’s team.
The Longhorns were led by Ranc with 13 points. Junior Kyle Masek contributed 7 points and sophomore Chris Scott also had 7 points.
