ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West jumped out early and then hung on as they finished the season sweep of the Fairview Warriors on Senior Night last night. West finishes the regular season with a record of 11-8 and a conference record of 9-7.

After jumping out to leads of 11-3 and 13-7, Fairview made things interesting by scoring four runs in the sixth and another in the second.  But sophomore Zach Hammer-Huber got the final out when he needed it, striking out Fairview leadoff hitter looking with the tying run on second base with a vicious curveball that broke about 4 feet right over the heart of the plate to end the game.

West took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring eight times.  With the game tied 3-3, freshman Owen Youngers drew a leadoff walk and junior Jeremiah Stover singled to left.  It was Stover’s second of three hits in the game. Junior Mike Montie then singled up the middle to score Youngers. A walk to junior Tyler Robinson loaded the bases, an error, and an RBI groundout put runners on second and third.  After a strikeout, junior Hunter Albers had the big hit, scoring two with a double over the center fielder’s head.  Two more walks loaded the bases before Albers come home on a wild pitch.  Stover then ripped his third hit of the game—and second of the inning--to plate the seventh run of the inning.  Montie came through with his second hit of the game to score the eighth run.

From a pitching point of view, LW’s big problem was walks. In the game in totality, LW handed out nine free passes.  Five of those ended up scoring. Even as consequently, the number eight and nine spots in the Warrior lineup had four hits, reached base via the free pass four times and scored six runs.

Montie (W, 2-2) pitched well, throwing five innings and allowing four earned runs, but struggled with his command, throwing 45 balls and only 43 strikes. He walked six batters and hit one.
