BUCKEYE --  Buckeye 9, Lutheran West 2

Junior Mike Montie (L, 0-1) did his job but it wasn’t enough as Lutheran West fell to host Buckeye on Thursday in cold Medina.  Playing on a field that was border-line unplayable, the Longhorns hung around for the first three innings, but let the game slip away late.

With the Longhorns short on pitching having won two close games against rival Cleaview in the last two days, Lutheran West skipper Trey Lamb needed Montie to keep LW in the game while throwing a good portion of the game on the mound.  Montie did just that, keeping the Bucks off balance and allowing only three earned runs (seven total) in five innings of work.  Montie got stronger with each passing inning, and did a great job of limiting damage, stranding five runners over his five innings.

The fourth inning—the only big inning the Bucks were able to muster against Montie—proved to be his undoing.  With the score 2-2, Montie coaxed a lead off ground ball to junior Tyler Robinson at short.  Robinson was unable to make the play.  The second batter of the inning reached on a seeing-eye ground ball through the hole.  This allowed Buckeye to have two runners on with the top of the order up.  Buckeye’s lead-off hitter hit a solid screamer to center.  On the ensuing throw home, the ball got away from Longhorn catcher, sophomore Jake Gross.  With the first run of the play already across the plate, Gross tracked the ball down and flipped to Montie covering home to nail the second-would-be-run at the plate.

After a strikeout, a single, and a hit by pitch, it looked like Montie would again limit the damage to only two runs when he got the batter to hit a ground ball to freshman Ed Ramos playing his first game of the year at third base.  Ramos played the grounder perfectly, stayed with a tough hop, then threw low to senior John Smolik at first base.  As Smolik stretched to try and catch the short-hop, the ball hit the egregiously uneven ground around first base and popped straight up in the air, bouncing over Smolik’s head for an error allowing two runs to score and the batter to end up at second.

On the next pitch, Gross gunned out the runner trying to steal third to end the inning.

West scored two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead.  After freshman Owen Youngers got things started with a one-out infield hit—his second of the game, junior Tyler Robinson moved him to second with a single up the middle. Senior Jake Albrecht followed that up with a sharp single to right to load the bases with no one out.  Junior Ryan Szczepinski followed that with a bases loaded that scored Youngers.  Robinson scored on a errant pick off throw by the Buckeye pitcher, but two strikeouts ended the threat.

Junior Christian Breitmos made his varsity pitching debut, allowing two earned runs in the bottom of the sixth.

West looks to rebound next week when they play a pair of games against Brooklyn.
