CLEARVIEW --  Lutheran West got a huge win last night despite themselves, and took the first step towards winning the PAC-12 Stripes Division as they swept the season series from conference rival Clearview 9-8.  Sophomore Zach Hammer-Huber slammed the door for the second consecutive night, stranding the tying run on third and the winning run on second in the seventh inning.

West got great hitting throughout the game, posting 9 hits and 9 runs and scoring four runs in two separate innings.  Senior Jake Albrecht, junior Ryan Szczepinski, and sophomore Jake Gross all had two hits for the Longhorns.  Ablercht, and juniors Hunter Albers and Tyler Robinson all had multiple RBIs.  And Albrecht, Szczepinski, and senior John Smolik all had doubles. And the wind was blowing straight in.

The story almost became about LW’s defense.  West scored a quick four runs in the second (Robinson and Albrecht had two-out RBI hits) and another run in the third (Gross knocked in Szczepinski) to take a 5-0 lead in the fourth.  Then the defense fell apart.  In the fourth inning, the Clippers were gifted four runs on three hits.  Szczepinski walked two and his defense committed two errors on routine ground balls.

West was not to be denied, and scored four times in the top of the fifth to swing the momentum back in their favor.  Albers and Albrecht had two-RBI hits.

But the defense let the Longhorns down again the bottom of the fifth when three more unearned runs crossed the plate on two more errors.  Szczepinski (W, 2-0), eventually was replaced on the mound by Hammer-Huber who had to get the final two outs of the inning.  In total, Szczepinski was charged with 7 runs.  None of them were earned.

Hammer-Huber coasted through the sixth before things got dicey in the seventh.  As always happens with all dramatic final innings, the first batter reached via an error.  After a fielder’s choice and an strikeout, Hammer-Huber walked the #9 hitter to put runners on first and second. A base hit up the middle and a mis-play in the outfield put runners on second and third with two outs. But Hammer-Huber stayed poised on the hill and coaxed a fly ball to sophomore Trey DeCicco in center field to end the game.

West makes the long trip out to Buckeye tomorrow to take on the Bucks.  First pitch is scheduled for 5pm.
