BLACK RIVER --  Black River 7, Lutheran West 6

For the third time in as many nights, Lutheran West was unable to hold a lead late in the game and fell by one run.  Up 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth, West allowed four runs in the fifth, tied the game back up with a run in the top of the sixth only to allow two more in the bottom of the sixth.

Junior Mike Montie (L, 0-2) was sharp on the mound in the early going, facing the minimum number of batters through the first three innings.  West put up three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.  Sophomore Trey DeCicco and senior John Smolik both doubled while junior Hunter Albers and sophomore Jakob Gross hit singles in the frame.

After a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth, the host Pirates got on the board with a two out RBI single to center in the fourth.
It was the fifth, however, that scored doom for the Longhorns.  A one out double and walk put runners on first and second.  Everyone at the field knew that Black River would bunt with their #9 hitter. Longhorn first baseman John Smolik came charging in as the bunt was laid down.  As Smolik charged in, he tried to pick up the bunt and fire to third in one motion.  It didn’t work. Smolik never even picked up the ball.  So Montie, rushing in off the mound grabbed the ball and tried to throw to first.  But his throw was rushed and wide of first base.  Instead of having two outs and runners on first and second, the Longhorns had already let in a run and had runners on first and third.  A steal of second, a two-run double and then a ground out and all of a sudden, a 4-1 lead became a 5-4 deficit.

West scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth to tie the game back up, but the Longhorns gave it back in the bottom of the inning.  A leadoff walk, a single, a double, and a sac fly pushed the Pirates lead to 7-5.

West managed one run in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late and the Longhorns fell for the third time in the week.
