ROCKY RIVER --  Firelands 21, Lutheran West 1

If Longhorn fans thought it couldn’t get any worse than yesterday’s debacle against Parma; they were sadly mistaken as Lutheran West gave up 20 or more runs for the second consecutive game today.  Falling to a really good Firelands squad 21-1, West falls to 1-2 on the season. Senior John Smolik (0-1) took the loss for the Longhorns.

With the wind blowing out and the temperature unseasonably warm at 60 degrees, things were looking up.  But then the game started. Pitchers on both sides struggled with an incredibly tiny—one observer compared it to a walnut—strikezone, throwing a combined 155 balls (compared to 137 strikes) throughout the five-inning, mercy-rule shortened contest.  Only one pitcher in the entire game—there were seven total—threw more strikes than balls. 22 walks were issued—12 from LW, and an incredible 10 from the winning team.  But Firelands got hits with men on base while Lutheran West managed to only hit in one—with a sacrifice fly—stranding nine men in their five times at bat.

The five-inning game lasted an unconscionable 2 hours and 25 minutes, as the peanut sized strike zone never opened up throughout the entire game.

The Longhorns look to right the ship when they travel out to Clearview on Monday when Stripes Division play begins. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00.
