ROCKY RIVER --  Parma 22, Lutheran West 6

In complete contrast to game one, Lutheran West played abysmally in game two, falling to visiting Parma 22-6. It was the most runs that Lutheran West has given up in a game since 2014.  In total, Longhorn pitching handed out nine walks, hit six batters, and allowed another batter to reach base after striking out on a wild pitch.  The defense didn’t help, as it allowed another four runners to reach on errors.  Parma only earned 10 base runners compared to the 20 that LW gave them, as the visiting Red Men rapped out only 10 hits on their way to the 22 runs.

Junior Jeremiah Stover (L, 0-1) started on the mound but couldn’t make it out of the third inning, getting tagged for 12 runs—only six earned, but walking five and striking out two.  Parma struggled to put solid contact on much of what Stover threw, but took advantage of three free passes, an error, four bloop singles, and a two-out, two-run double to put West down 8-0 before the first inning was over.

Offensively, West had opportunities continually, but was never able to put the big inning together.  In the first, junior Tyler Robinson was knocked in by a sacrifice fly from senior John Smolik, but the Longhorns stranded two men on base.  In the second, the Longhorns plated two more--freshman Edward Ramos on a double steal and sophomore Trey Decicco on a sacrifice fly from Robinson--but freshman Owen Youngers got thrown out at the plate to end the inning when he tried to score on a single from senior Jake Albrecht.

In the fourth, West scored three times but left bases loaded when junior Hunter Albers’ long fly ball to right center was tracked down to end the inning.  The Longhorns hit into double plays in both the sixth and seventh with runners on first and second.

The Longhorns host Firelands on Thursday in their first conference game of the year.
