COLUMBIA --  Playing their sixth game in as many school days, Lutheran West turned in a real stinker, falling to host Columbia 16-4 thanks to four errors, an ill-fated call from the umpire, and 15 unearned runs.  Senior Owen Albers (1-2) took the loss for the Longhorns but it should have been given to the seven men behind him as their lack-luster play had more to do with Lutheran West losing than Albers’ pitching.

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, it looked like the Longhorns would pick up right where they left off when they rolled the Raider’s 11-0 on Friday.  The bottom of the second turned into a disaster.  With a runner on first and one out, Albers fielded a comebacker. But sophomore shortstop Tyler Robinson was tardy covering second to start the double play and Albers double clutched before throwing the ball into centerfield to put runners on first and second.  Albers got a ground ball from the next batter, but instead of ending the inning, there was only two outs.  The next 6 batters got hits (three singles, two doubles, and a triple) and suddenly instead of leading 3-0, LW was down 6-3.

The third was even worse. Sophomore Ryan Szczepinski fared no better. With the bases loaded and one out, Szczepinski induced what should have been (and indeed really was) an inning ending double play. Albers, who was now playing shortstop, cleanly fielded the ground ball, flipped it to junior second baseman John Smolik at second for one, who fired a strike to senior Alex Gavlak at first for what should have been the third out of the inning.  But the umpire called the runner safe to the surprise of everyone in the park despite the throw beating the runner by a full step.

West didn’t help themselves when the next ball was a ground ball right at junior third baseman Jake Albrecht. Albrecht booted the ball to make the score 8-3. At that point the wheels fell off the wagon, and two singles, a walk, a grand slam, another single, another error on Albrecht, and an error on sophomore Hunter Albers in centerfield on a fly ball made the score 16-3.  In all, Szczepinski got six outs in the inning (outs plus errors plus the missed call) and the Raiders tallied 10 runs—all coming after the missed call and the first error of the inning.

The Longhorns have a much-needed day off tomorrow before they start the Sectional Tournament on Wednesday when they take on St. Martin DePorres at home. First pitch is scheduled for 5pm.
