ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West got the job done Saturday, defeating upstart John Marshall 7-2 behind a stellar pitching performance from sophomore Jeremiah Stover (W, 1-0).  Stover needed only 82 pitches to throw the complete game, allowing only 6 hits, 0 walks, and 0 earned runs in the 7 inning performance.  Stover struck out 8.

Stover was only really in a jam a couple of times.  In the second, a one-out error on the Longhorn infield and back to back singles plated an unearned run and put runners on first and third with one out.  But Stover coaxed a weak ground ball back to him and then threw home to nail the runner on third trying to score for the second out.  Two pitches later he fielded his second straight comebacker, throwing to first this time to end the inning.

In the fourth, a leadoff triple led to John Marshall’s second run of the game.  The next batter grounded a 0-2 pitch to LW senior third baseman Owen Albers. Albers chased the runner back to third, but then threw wildly to first, allowing the runner to trot home.  Stover whiffed the next two hitters and senior Jeremy Geye threw out the runner at first when he attempted an ill-fated steal of second base.

The game was close throughout because LW struggled to break through with the sticks. Following a sickly 1 for 13 performance with runners on base the night before, LW went 2 for 11 in the same category in the first five innings.  But LW came through in the sixth with three RBI hits to break the game open.

After sophomore Hunter Albers reached base on a dropped pop up and sophomore pinch hitter Ryan Szczepinski walked, Stover aided his own cause with an RBI single up the middle to push the LW lead to 4-2.  Szczepinksi and Stover would both score on a two-run, two-out single the other way by sophomore Michael Montie to push the lead to 6-2.  Montie scored the final run on a double by Albers.

Albers got the Longhorns on the board in the third when he knocked in Stover with a double over the left fielder’s head.  Geye, who was on first at the time of the pitch, got thrown out at the plate on the play. But Albers scored later in the inning on a two-out RBI single by senior Alex Gavlak to put LW up 2-1.

After John Marshall tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth, Longhorn sophomore shortstop Tyler Robinson scored and would prove to be the deciding run in the bottom of the fourth when he stole third base and scored on an errant throw by John Marshall’s catcher.
