ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West’s late inning comeback fell short as the Longhorns lost for just the third time on the year—all at home and all against Stars Division foes.  West dug themselves a 9-1 hole and then ran out of outs to complete a comeback.  The Longhorns scored the last six runs of the game—all in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but it wasn’t enough.

The Longhorns looked emotionally drained from the beginning of the game.  After winning their first District title the night before, Lutheran West looked slightly bored by what was essentially an exhibition game.  With the conference title wrapped up long ago, and a date in the Regionals secured for the first time since 1996, the game meant nothing more than a number in the teams overall record.
Excellent pitching, which has been a hallmark of the Longhorns stellar season was noticeably absent in the game.  Junior Owen Albers (L, 3-3) started and was dinged for five runs (four earned) in only three innings of work.  Albers struggled with keeping the ball down—a dangerous problem against a strong hitting opponent and with the wind blowing straight out.  Sophomore John Smolik wasn’t that much better in relief (four earned runs in four innings pitched).  The seventh inning was the only inning in which the Longhorns kept the visiting Dukes off the scoreboard.

The Longhorns scored their first run of the game when junior Alex Gavlak started the fifth inning with a hustle double.  Smolik doubled him in.  In the sixth, LW scored twice more when senior Scottie Berghaus knocked in both Albers and junior Rory Zakareckis with a double to the school building in left field.  In the seventh, West plated one run on a fielder’s choice, another on an error, and the last two runs on a two-out home run that landed on Linden Road off the bat of Zakareckis.

West finishes the regular season with a record of 13-3 in conference.  They will play in the Regional Semi-Finals at Massillon next Thursday.
