ROCKY RIVER --  In a game that is being touted as one of the biggest upsets of the season, Lutheran West derailed reigning District champion Elyria Catholic 7-4.  Elyria Catholic was ranked #4 in the final state poll. West is the first and only team this year to send Elyria Catholic ace Andrew Abrahamowicz home with a loss.  The Longhorns put up six runs in the second inning and then held on to advance to face Kirtland in the District Championship tomorrow.

West got a one-out single from senior Tristan Zimmer to get things started in the second.  Junior Alex Gavlak coaxed a walk, and sophomore John Smolik was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Junior Jeremy Geye patiently accepted a full count walk to bring in Zimmer from third and put the Longhorns on the board.  It was then the Elyria Catholic began to look like the inexperienced team.  Senior Josh Cales hit a ground ball between first and second that should have been fielded by Elyria Catholic’s second baseman.  Instead of just Gavlak scoring from third, Gavlak and Smolik scored to make the score 3-0. After a ground out from sophomore Owen Albers for the second out, senior Alex Robinson singled into the hole between first and second.  EC’s second baseman was able to field the ball, but in his haste to try and get Robinson at first, threw the ball away allowing Robinson to move to second.  Geye scored on the play and Cales moved to third. Junior Rory Zakareckis plated both Cales and Robinson with a bloop double down the third base line to put LW up 6-0.

In direct contrast, LW flashed the leather all game.  In the first, LW got a game-changing double-play to keep EC off the scoreboard.  With one out and a runner on third, senior shortstop Scottie Berghaus made a diving catch on a line drive and then doubled the runner off of third to end the inning.  In the second inning with runners on first and third and two outs, Robinson picked the runner off of first. In the sixth, after EC had cut the lead to 6-3, Zakareckis made a sensational diving catch on a tailing line drive right in front of the fence in foul territory.

In the seventh, the game got a bit scary.  Thanks to the OHSAA new rule on pitch limits, Robinson only had 18 pitches to get through the seventh inning.  The OHSAA has mandated a daily pitch limit of 125 and Robinson started the inning with 107.  After a six pitch walk to start the inning, Robinson struck out the second hitter for his twelfth strikeout of the day.  He then hit the third batter of the inning—the #9 hitter in EC’s lineup—with the second pitch of the at bat.  He then coaxed a ground ball from EC’s leadoff hitter to Berghaus at short but the turn at second wasn’t quick enough and LW was only able to get the force out at second.

This put Longhorn Coach Trey Lamb in the sad position of having to pull his ace with two outs, two men on base, and EC’s best hitters up.  Lamb went to Zimmer to try and get the final out of the game.  Zimmer didn’t fare very well, walking both the batters he faced.

Lamb went back to the bullpen.  This time he went to Albers.  Albers was asked to face EC’s #4 hitter, Leighton Banjoff with the bases loaded.   Banjoff, who represented the winning run, had already hit a solo home run off of Robinson in the fourth inning and looked locked in at the plate.  Albers look unintimidated by the situation and calmly got Banjoff to line out to Cales in center field to end the game.

The Longhorns advance to play in the District Finals against Kirtland tomorrow at 4:30pm at Lakewood High School.
