ROCKY RIVER --  Behind excellent pitching from senior Alex Robinson, Lutheran West defended their home turf, knocking off Gilmour and advancing to the District Tournament held next week at Lakewood High School.  For the second straight year, the Longhorns sent the Lancers packing, ending their tournament run before it really started.  Last year, LW defeated the Lancers in the Sectional Semi-finals 2-1.  This year, LW shut them out 3-0 in the Sectional Finals.
Gilmour really had two threats the entire game: the top of the first and the stop of the seventh.  The first could have turned out ugly, but Robinson walked the tight rope and escaped unscathed.  After a leadoff single to start the inning, Gilmour’s leadoff hitter tried to steal second base. But for some reason he stopped half way.  Longhorn catcher Jeremy Geye’s throw to second put him in a rundown that was finished by Robinson.  After a walk and hit by pitch, a line drive to senior Tristan Zimmer turned into a double play when he was able to double off the runner on first easily to end the inning.

In the seventh, things got dicey.  With LW up 3-0, Robinson got a lead off fly ball to junior left fielder Rory Zakareckis for the first out.  Gilmour got their first and only runner to third in the game when they got back to back hits—a single and a double.  But Robinson was not to be intimidated by the moment as he struck out the next two batters to end the game.

Offensively, West had opportunities to score all game long.  They broke through in the first, third, and fifth—scoring one run in each.  Senior Josh Cales led off the game with a  walk, and then scored on back-to-back two-out singles from Zakareckis and senior Scottie Berghaus.  In the third, Robinson scored on a two out single from Zakareckis.  And in the fifth, Zakareckis picked up his second RBI with a sacrifice fly to bring in Cales.

West will face #4 ranked Elyria Catholic at Lakewood next Tuesday. The Longhorns will have their work cut out for them as the Panthers are expected to throw University of Nebraska-commit Andrew Abrahamowicz who is currently 7-0 on the season.  West lost to Abrahamowicz in the Sectional Finals two years ago.
