ROCKY RIVER --  Sophomore John Smolik (W, 1-0) worked his way out of jams all day and Lutheran West’s offense wore down Fairview’s pitching as Lutheran West (4-0, 2-0) swept the season series from Fairview for the second straight year with an 8-3 win last night.
With the wind whipping out to left field (to the rate of 25 mph in the early parts of the game), West rode Smolik’s stellar pitching to a victory.  Smolik gave up an unearned run in the first, and walked the first two batters of the second inning, but recovered to escape the second inning without any damage thanks to junior Alex Gavlak throwing out the lead runner on a double steal. Smolik was again in trouble in the third inning—runners on second and third with only one out—but a strikeout and a ground out allowed him to again avoid giving up any runs.
The Longhorn offense went to work in the third and fourth to put up two runs in the third and three in the fourth.  Freshman David Busch started the third with the first varsity hit of his young career.  Senior Josh Cales followed with an RBI single and—after a wild pitch and passed ball moved senior Josh Cales to third—junior Owen Albers brought him home with a ground out.

In the fourth, West scored three runs on one hit (from Cales), taking advantage of two walks, a hit by pitch, and a key error on a great bunt by Gavlak.

After Fairview cracked the Smolik code for a run on a two out hit in the fourth, to close the LW lead to 5-2, West went back to work scoring three more times in the sixth.  Cales and junior Rory Zakareckis had RBI hits and Albers had a sacrifice fly to bring the score to 8-2.

Senior Tristan Zimmer and Cales pitched the sixth and seventh to finish the game.

The game, that was originally scheduled to be played at Bohlken Park, was moved to Lutheran West’s home turf due to unplayable wet conditions on Fairview’s home field.

West will travel out to Keystone’s Penfield Park tomorrow in what looks like their first test of the year.
