ROCKY RIVER --  Rory Zakareckis (W, 1-0) became the fourth pitcher in Lutheran West history to throw a 7-inning complete game no-hitter--and the first since 2008 to do so--when he shut down the visiting John Marshall Lawyers last night.  The junior threw a steady diet of fastballs to the overmatched Lawyers and struck out 12. He walked only two.
The last no-hitter that LW saw was in 2010 when three pitchers did it.  All three, however, were mercy-rule shortened five inning games.  The last pitcher to throw a seven-inning no-hitter was Cal Thomay (class of 2010 and current LW Baseball assistant coach) who did it on the road against Clearview in 2008.  Zakareckis joins Thomay, current Longhorn head coach Trey Lamb (class of 1998), and Dan Felten (class of 1995) as the only Longhorn pitchers to throw a complete-game 7-inning no-hitter in LW baseball history.
The Longhorns scored three runs in the first inning and three in the second and never looked back.  A sacrifice fly from junior Owen Albers, an RBI single from senior Tristan Zimmer, and a bases loaded walk to junior Alex Gavlak scored the three runs in the first.  An RBI single from senior Alex Robinson scored senior Josh Cales, a balk scored Robinson, and an RBI single from senior Scottie Berghaus plated Zakareckis in the second.  Zakareckis added an RBI ground out in the third to push the lead to 7-0. And junior Jeremy Geye knocked in two runs with a single up the middle in the sixth to complete LW’s 9 run afternoon.
The defensive gem of the day came from Albers at third base.  With two outs in the fourth, Zakareckis allowed his first baserunner of the game on a walk.  The next hitter laced a looping line drive to centerfield that should have ended the inning but instead scored John Marshall's only run when it hit the heal of freshman Jeremiah Stover’s glove for an error.  It was the only ball that reached the outfield off of Zakareckis all day.
Brandon Gonzalez, John Marshall’s next batter, laced a sharp ground ball to the hole at shortstop for what appeared off the bat to be the Lawyer's best chance for a hit.  But Albers ranged far to his left and dove to snag the ball before it could get through and then threw from his knees across the diamond to beat Gonzalez by half a step and keep the no-hitter intact.  Zakareckis coasted the rest of the way.
