ROCKY RIVER --  On a beautiful night for baseball, Lutheran West rode senior Tommy Walker’s (W, 1-0) right arm to victory over Brooklyn 2-0.  West’s two run fifth inning was more than enough as Walker dominated the visiting Hurricanes from start to finish.  With Columbia’s loss to Clearview earlier tonight, West takes over first place in the Stripes Division with a 6-1 record.  Columbia is 4-1 and Clearview is 5-2.

Brooklyn never even threatened to score the entire game, never even getting a runner to second base.  The closest they came was in the second inning when they got a leadoff hit.  But the next batter lined out to Longhorn junior right fielder Alex Robinson. Robinson tried to double the Hurricane runner off first base, but threw wildly.  As the runner took off for second, sophomore catcher Jeremy Geye calmly barehanded the ball and threw a strike to second base. Junior shortstop Scottie Berghaus applied the tag to complete the double play.  After that play, Brooklyn managed one walk and one single the rest of the game.  Walker threw a grand total of 75 pitches in the complete game shutout.

Brooklyn’s David Oldag (L, 0-4) was the hard luck loser.  Oldag baffled LW hitters all day, working out of jams in the first and third innings.  But he was unable to escape the fifth inning unscathed.  After a leadoff groundout to start the inning, junior Josh Cales laced a single to right and then promptly stole second base.  Sophomore Owen Albers squibbed a dribbler down the third base line for an infield hit as Cales moved to third.  Before the next pitch, Albers took off for second to try and get in a run-down.  As Albers ran back and forth, Cales sprinted in from third ahead of the throw.  Amazingly, Brooklyn got neither runner out and Albers ended up on second and Cales scored.

Walker then drove the next pitch into the gap to score Albers from second easily.

West will travel out to Brooklyn for tonight’s game in hopes of gaining a sweep of the season series.
