ROCKY RIVER --  One day after Coach Trey Lamb picked up his first career win over Buckeye, he completed the double play, grabbing his first career win over Keystone.  West last defeated Keystone in 2010.

The Longhorns jumped out to an early lead and then used great pitching from the bull pen to hold on and defeat the Wildcats.

The game was more or less decided in the top of the fourth inning.  With LW leading 4-2, freshman starting pitcher John Smolik was beginning to struggle.  Smolik had been in and out of trouble all day, stranding the bases loaded in the first, and runners on second and third in the third.  The fourth inning started with a walk and was compounded by a one-out error on third baseman sophomore Owen Albers.  After Smolik walked Keystone’s number two hitter Clay Todd to load the bases, Lamb had no choice but go to the bull pen with junior Alex Robinson (W, 1-0).

Robinson, who had thrown five innings just three days before, was dynamite in relief, ending the threat without giving up a run and then pitching two quick innings before being relieved in the seventh by sophomore Matt Brosky.
As daylight waned, Brosky made things interesting in the seventh before slamming the door.  After an 8 pitch at-bat resulted in a leadoff walk, Brosky coaxed a fly ball to senior Tommy Walker in right.  A sharp single to right put runners on first and second and the tying run to the plate.  Brosky struck out the next batter for the second out.  Fans and players alike thought that the game was over when Brosky appeared to throw strike three to the Keystone first baseman Turner Campbell twice, but both pitches were called balls, resulting in a walk to load the bases.  Brosky, however, was not about to give in, and he blew away Keystone pinch hitter Cade Christoff with a strikeout to end the game.

Offensively West did what they needed to early, scoring three runs in the first inning to take control of the game.  Brosky started off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left field to score junior Josh Cales from third.  Junior Scottie Berghaus drove in two more runs with a two-out single to plate Walker and sophomore Rory Zakareckis.
West advances to 6-2 on the season and 5-1 in conference.  They will host Brooklyn on Monday.

Lutheran West assistant Coach Cal Thomay earned the win on the mound the last time that LW defeated Keystone.  West won the game 10-8.  You can read the write up from that game here.
