OBERLIN --  Lutheran West suffered one of the more frustrating defeats on Wednesday when they gave host Oberlin Phoenix a win on Wednesday.  Senior Eric Szczepinski, brought on with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with LW clinging to a slim one run lead was unable to escape and LW fell 5-4.

Szczepinski was put in a very tough situation.  With LW up 4-3 after Szczepinski knocked in junior Sam Jakabcic in the top of the seventh, Szczepinski  was called on to clean up the damage dealt by Oberlin when they loaded the bases on freshman Alex Robinson.  Robinson had gotten the first out of the inning on a strikeout looking, but then gave up back to back singles and a walk to load bases before being relieved by Szczepinski.
Szczepinski walked the first batter he saw--on five pitches--to tie the game.  Fans gained a touch of optimism when Szczepinski struck out the next hitter looking for the second out.  That optimism was crushed against the rocks when Szczepinski walked the number eight hitter in Oberlin’s line up on four pitches to push the winning run across and truly end the game in “walk-off” fashion.

The frustrating final frame overshadowed a tremendous varsity debut from sophomore starting pitcher Tommy Walker who struck out nine Oberlin hitters, scattering six hits and two walks in six solid innings of work.

Freshman Josh Cales was the only Longhorn with two hits on the day.
