FIRELANDS --  Lutheran West picked up a huge win on Thursday, coming from behind to stun host Firelands 4-2 in a nine inning affair on the Thursday before spring break. Senior Greg Kunze and senior Aaron Geye were both dominant on the hill and West got clutch hits from senior Joe Peters and junior Nick Gambetta to grab their fifth win of the year.

Kunze started the game for the Longhorns and was dominant for the first five innings.  Kunze never faced more than five batters in an inning until the sixth when he began to tire.  After a pair of walks to start the sixth frame, and a sacrifice bunt that turned into a single to load the bases, Kunze walked in the first run of the game.  Firelands scored their second run later in the inning on a suicide squeeze.  Fortunately for Lutheran West, a second squeeze attempt that inning failed, and LW was able to escape further damage and only be down 2-0 at the end of the sixth.

West didn’t wait around to start their rally in the bottom of the seventh.  Sophomore Tim Gettinger started the inning with a double to dead center.  After senior pinch hitter Noah Potantus walked and senior Collin McCartney moved them to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, Geye cut the Firelands lead to 2-1 with a ground out to short.  Peters then knocked in the tying run with an RBI single to right.

After Geye’s pitching shut down the vaunted Firelands offense in the seventh and eighth, West struck for two more in the top of the ninth, when Gambetta knocked in two runs on a single up the middle with one out and the bases loaded.  Gambetta’s single scored Peters from third and senior Jake Pshock from second.

The bottom of the ninth was not, however, without interest.  After a quick first two outs, Firelands catcher Tristan Clark singled to right on a 0-2 pitch to keep the game going.  Shortstop Cole Sklarek then walked and both Clark and Sklarek moved to second and third on a wild pitch.  Geye, however, was not fazed as he struck out big Frank Johnson on a nasty changeup to end in the game.
