ROCKY RIVER --  The Lutheran West baseball team rolled Christian Community School Warriors yesterday in a mercy-rule shortened game 13-3. The Longhorns jumped out to a 6-1 lead after the first two innings and never looked back, winning their first game of the season.

Senior Greg Kunze started the game on the mound and, while he was not very efficient—he threw 89 pitches in five innings—he did what he needed to do to get the win.  Kunze struck out the side in the first and third inning, as well as two in the second and the fourth.  CCS only managed to put nine balls into play, but turned four of them into hits.

Offensively, LW pounded out 13 hits, scoring runs in all six innings.  The Longhorns got a two RBI single from sophomore Tommy Walker in the first, a two run homer onto Linden Road from sophomore Tim Gettinger in the second, a two-run double from Walker in the fifth, and a two run double from senior Eric Szczepinski in the sixth to push the lead to ten.    Walker finished with three hits in four at bats, two doubles, and four RBIs on the day.

West will open its conference season on Thursday at Wellington should the weather cooperate.
