ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West lost a wild one Saturday morning in the first game of a double header against Independence.  Junior Eric Szczepinski (L, 0-1) started the game off with three strong innings before failing to retire anyone in the fourth. LW made a comeback in the sixth and seventh, but it was too little too late.

After jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a double from senior CJ Griffin and a two out RBI single from senior Eric Lewis, Independence tied the game up with a run in the second.  LW left the bases loaded in the fourth.  In top of the fourth, however, Independence broke through and took control of the game.

It got ugly fast.  After a leadoff double, a bunt single, and a walk, Independence had the bases loaded with no one out.  Back to back singles up the middle plated two runs and put Independence up 3-1.  Independence’s second hitter in the lineup, Daniel Mathews, then hit a ground ball to Lutheran West shortstop CJ Griffin.  Griffin fired the ball home to get the force out and stop the run from scoring.  Unfortunately for LW, junior catcher Derek Naim was unable to handle the throw and another run came in.  Independence senior shortstop—and Ohio State recruit—JP Sorma then cleared the bases with a triple to right center.

Now down 9-1, LW rallied for three in the sixth thanks to a two run homerun by Naim and a two out RBI single by sophomore Nick Gambetta. After Gambetta, in relief in the seventh, gave up a pair of runs—including one on a balk—West scored the final run on an RBI double from junior Aaron Geye.

Naim’s homerun was, by all honest admissions, not a real homerun.  With Lewis on first and no one out, Naim sent a long fly ball to deep left center over the head of both of Independence’s outfielders.  The ball hopped over the temporary fencing that LW has had to put up due to construction on the Jochum Auditorium.  Independence’s center fielder put his hands up for an instant, than reached down over the fence, grabbed the ball and threw it in to the infield.  Naim, who never stopped at second, kept going and scored easily as the rest of Independence’s fielder assumed erroneously that the ball was a ground rule double.  After a brief conference, the umpires correctly ruled that since the outfielder retrieved the ball before they could check that the ball was in fact over the fence, it was still in play and therefore Naim was allowed to continue running.
