ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West won a wild one last night against visiting Brookside coming from behind from 6-1 and 12-9 to win a cross divisional game on Thursday.  Junior Greg Kunze was outstanding in relief, pitching the final two and a third innings and getting his third win of the year.  Junior Aaron Geye had a double, a triple and six RBIs for the Longhorns.

It was a struggle to throw strikes for both teams throughout.  With a bone chilling wind gusting out to right, and rain and hail falling throughout the first half of the game, both starting pitchers were victimized by a tiny, yet inconsistent strike zone.  Junior starting pitcher Eric Sczcepinski and senior relief pitcher Eric Lewis combined for eight walks, one hit by pitch, and 11 runs in only four innings.  Brookside’s first two pitchers—Greg Maust and Nick Wehler—weren’t much better, combining for five free passes and nine runs—all earned—in four innings.

Fortunately, LW’s relief corpse was far superior to Brookside’s final two pitchers.  LW threw out senior Tyler Cerny (one third of an inning) and Kunze (two and two-thirds innings pitched) who combined for three innings and only one run and no walks.  Brookside countered with Ryan Blotzer and Bryan Decato who combined for two innings, six free passes and six runs.

The story, however, was about clutch hitting as much as bad pitching.  After striking out with two on and two out in the first inning, Geye came through with a two run triple in the third, and a bases-loaded, three-RBI double in the fourth.  Geye was then hit by the pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth to knock in his sixth run of the game.

It wasn’t just Geye who hit.  Szczepinski had four hits including a pair of doubles, two RBIs, and scored three runs.  Senior CJ Griffin matched Szczepinski exactly with four hits, two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs.  LW’s two through six hitters were a ridiculous eleven for 18 with seven extra base hits and eleven RBIs.
