ROCKY RIVER --  Senior Zach Hausmann did everything that he could, but the weather wouldn’t hold off long enough for LW to complete their comeback last night against Clearview.  Clearview, who jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, couldn’t contain Hausmann, but was able to get the victory thanks to team hitting and only having to play five innings because of lightning that wouldn’t stop.

With the conference title on the line, LW looked to senior Justin Chislow to come through on the mound against a hard hitting Clearview team.  In the first inning, it quickly looked like a disaster.

With the wind gusting straight out to center, Chislow was blooped and blasted to the tune of two runs and the bases loaded before retiring his first batter.  Chislow got the next two without allowing a run to score.  Yet, as has happened to LW pitching time and again this year though, he couldn’t get all the way out of the jam, giving up a two run single before the third out.

Then Hausmann went to work.  Hausmann, hitting after a two out walk to senior Cal Thomay, smacked a monster blast onto the roof of the school in left center and brought LW within two at 4-2.

Chislow quickly settled down, giving up no runs in the second and only one in the third.  LW scored a pair of runs in their half of the third to close the score to 5-4.  In the inning Clearview committed four errors, but LW didn’t capitalize, leaving the bases loaded.

Chislow gave up a leadoff single, a double, and an intentional walk to start the fourth, but successfully limited the damage to only one run.  Clearview extended their lead to 6-4.

Senior Mike Holick walked to start LW’s half of the fourth.  He scored on an RBI double from Chislow, cutting Clearview’s lead to 6-5.  After a fly out, Hausmann went to work again.  After falling behind in the count 1-1, Hausmann unloaded a laser beam to left field that landed on the roof of the weight room.  It was hit so hard it took only one bounce to jump onto the roof of the Senney Gym.  Hausmann’s second bomb of the game—and fourth of the year—gave LW the lead 7-6.

The lead would be short lived as Chislow got the first two outs of the fifth inning and then gave up a double and a single to tie the game.  Exit Chislow, enter senior Billy Valletto.  Valletto got ahead 0-2 of his first batter, and then promptly gave up a single to center on a spinning slider to give the lead back to Clearview 8-7.

LW went down frustratingly quickly in the bottom of the fifth.  A leadoff walk to senior Mitch Zaharewicz looked good, but quickly turned bad when junior Brandon McCartney’s attempted sacrifice bunt was turned into a force out at second and turned ugly when senior Ty Hoy’s attempted sacrifice bunt was turned into a double play when Hoy failed to run it out.

One batter into the sixth, lightning struck. The umpires waited for a full hour, but it was to no avail; the storm wouldn’t blow over.

Hausmann was due to hit fourth in the bottom of the sixth.
