ROCKY RIVER --  The Longhorn’s six-game winning streak was snapped last night on a steal of home in the top of the seventh.  The picture perfect afternoon was matched by a well played game from both teams—a real pleasure to watch by fans.  In direct contrast to many of the games played this year, the weather was perfect, the defense and pitching of both teams was excellent, the game moved quickly and the officiating was clean and top notched.  In short it was everything that a fan would want to see in a game.

After LW jumped out to a 2-0 lead after three innings, Parma cut into the lead with a two out double off senior starting pitcher Cal Thomay.  LW answered right back with a run in the bottom of the frame on a leadoff double from senior Mitch Zaharewicz, a sacrifice bunt from junior Brandon McCartney, and a successful suicide squeeze—his third on the year—from senior Ty Hoy

Up 3-1 in the top of the fifth, it quickly was apparent that LW was flirting with another disastrous inning.  Struggling all year to squelch the big inning, Thomay surrendered a double, a walk, and a single to load the bases with none out.  A sacrifice fly and an errant throw quickly tied the game at three.  After a fly out for out number two, Thomay was unable to get out of the inning and limit the damage to two runs.  An RBI single to center and a double to right knocked Thomay out with runners on second and third.

Longhorn Coach Dave Sellke turned to sophomore Anders Mahon to slam the door.  Mahon responded by walking the first batter on four pitches to load the bases.  He didn’t cave, though, and coaxed a ground out to short to finish the inning with no more runs.

LW would tie the game in the sixth on two free passes, a defensive lapse on Hoy’s second straight sac bunt to load the bases, and an error on a pickoff attempt.  LW had a chance to blow the game open with senior Mike Holick up with the bases loaded, but Holick rolled over on a 3-1 outside fastball and grounded out to second.

With the game now in a 4-4 tie, Mahon looked a little overwhelmed on the mound.  Faced with the 2-3-4 hitters in Division I Parma’s line up, Mahon lost confidence in his fastball and fell in love with the curve.  Parma’s hitters, a little more disciplined than those of Mahon’s previous opponents, were more apt to take his first pitch curve for ball one and as a result Mahon found himself working from behind the whole inning.

Still Mahon practically got out of the inning unscathed.  A leadoff single and a walk were made worse when he balked the runners to second and third with no one out.  Mahon struck out the next batter for out number one.  With the infield in, Mahon coaxed a ground out to Hoy at second for out number two.  After a 3-2 walk to load the bases, Mahon switched to the wind up.  It would be his undoing.  On the 0-1 pitch, the runner on third took off on Mahon ’s first move, and stole home easily.  By the time Mahon threw the ball toward the plate, the runner was two-thirds of the way to the plate.

On the next pitch, a ground out to Thomay at third ended the inning.

LW didn’t get a runner past first in the bottom of the seventh.
