ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West jumped all over Keystone last night, scoring seven runs in the first inning, and then held on to win a nail biter 10-8.  With a chilling wind blowing in from left, Keystone, alone atop the Stars Division going into the day, fell to 10-5 on the year and 6-2 in conference.  LW improved to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in conference

LW wasted no time putting pressure on Keystone’s ace, Caleb Schillace.  Schillace, who had given up only three earned runs in over 16 innings pitched and had a 2-0 record in PAC-10 play, was immediately greeted by a single from senior Mike Holick.  Holick scored when senior Justin Chislow drilled a double to left. Senior Cal Thomay walked, senior Zach Hausmann singled in Chislow, and senior Ryan Jones singled in Thomay.  After a strikeout, a walk, and an error on Keystone’s first basemen, senior Ty Hoy collected the fourth RBI hit of the inning, knocking in Jones.  Two more runs would score on bases loaded walks to Holick and Thomay, and LW was up 7-0 before anyone knew what had happened.

LW would knock Schillace out of the game in the third on a walk to Holick, a bunt from Chislow, and an RBI single from Thomay.

The top of the third saw LW let Keystone back in the game.  Due to the game being the fourth game of the week, LW coach Dave Sellke had given the ball to sophomore Anders Mahon.  Mahon, who had one previous varsity start in his career, looked very sharp early in the game, retiring the first eight Wildcat hitters he faced.  That took him to two outs in the third inning.  Then the wheels fell off of the wagon.

Mahon got three ground outs in the next four hitters.  Each one should have ended the inning.  All three reached on errors.  Add in a walk and a bases clearing double and a 7-0 lead suddenly shrunk to a 7-5 ball game.

After LW scored once in the bottom of the third, Keystone started the fourth with two straight singles and Sellke had no choice but take the ball from Mahon and give it to Thomay.  Thomay should have gotten out of the inning with only one run scored, but another infield error cost them the second run.

While Thomay was keeping the Wildcats at bay, LW tacked on a run in the fifth without a hit (a hit by pitch, a passed ball, a wild pitch, and a ground out), and a run in the sixth on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze from Hoy.

Thomay shut down the Wildcats until the top of the seventh, when he gave up a pair of base hits to start the frame.  Sellke went to his ace senior Billy Valletto to close out the game, a problem that LW has had this season.  Twice LW has coughed up leads in the last inning.  Valletto, who pitched a complete game Tuesday, looked none worse for the short rest striking out three of the four batters he faced to end the game.
