ROCKY RIVER --  Lutheran West fell just short last night, dropping their third conference game of the year to Wellington 8 to 6.  Wellington down to its last strike, scored three runs on a two-out, two-strike bases loaded hit from Jaron Antill to give them the lead in the top of the seventh.  Fireworks were aplenty in the three hour marathon last night, as few innings went by without controversy and fewer went down without runners in scoring position.

The game started with Wellington and LW giving each other runs.  In the bottom of the second, an error led to junior Brandon McCartney’s two out, two run single giving LW a 2-0 lead on two unearned runs.  LW gave one of the runs right back when senior starting pitcher Justin Chislow was called for a two-out balk to move a Wellington runner to second base, then promptly giving up a single to center to score him and cut the lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the third the trend continued when senior Sam Myers reached on an error and then scored on a throwing error by Wellington ’s starting pitcher Ryan Bliss later in the inning.  West scored its second run in the inning on a single by senior Cal Thomay.  Wellington gave LW another out in the inning when it failed to catch a popup off the bat of senior Zach Hausmann, but LW couldn’t capitalize later in the inning.

Wellington roared right back in the fourth, capitalizing on five hits in the fourth.  The key hit came to the second hitter who grounded to a diving C.J. Griffin at third base.  The freshman got up and threw a strike to McCartney at second, but the runner was ruled to have beaten the throw.  That played proved to cost LW four runs, as none would have scored in the inning had the runner been out at second.

The score remained 5-4 until the sixth when with two outs, when senior Mike Holick connected on a solo home run over the right field fence onto Linden Road.  Holick’s blast was followed by Chislow being hit by the pitch, moving to second on a wild pitch and scoring on Thomay’s second RBI single of the game.

The 6-5 lead would be short lived.  After the first two Wellington batters singled, Chislow coaxed a pop up to the senior catcher Billy Valletto in foul territory.  He then got the ground ball that he wanted, but it was hit too slowly for McCartney at second base to make the play, loading the bases.  Chislow then struck out Wellington’s pinch hitter to get the second out, but gave up a single to left center on a 2-2 pitch to Antill to clear the bases.
