CCS --
Starting games strong is an aspect of the game that has been an issue for the Lutheran West Longhorns Men’s Soccer team in 2012. Tuesday was no different. Matched up against a weaker Christian Community School team, the Longhorns started the game slow, but did pick up the play greatly in the second half to come out on top, 3-2.

The Longhorns opened the game without key senior defender C.J. McNamee¸ a strong presence in the defensive half for the Longhorns. The team was able to fill his position, making switches with the starting lineup, but it was obvious in the first half the team was missing his aggressive play. The Longhorns allowed CCS several breakaway opportunities early in the half and CCS obliged with two goals in the first 20 minutes off of an own goal by the Longhorns and a penalty kick taken by CCS. The Longhorns struggled to get back into the game, allowing CCS to make several more runs, but they were stopped by the Longhorn defense. Finally, the Longhorns caught a break when senior captain Nick Vrabel scored off of a penalty kick, giving the Longhorns a bit of momentum going into the second half. West was relieved when the first 40 minutes were up and halftime was called to get a break and make adjustments to their play.

At halftime, Coach Josh Hubeler made some changes to the starting lineup to prevent any more slow play from happening in the second half. In the second half, the Longhorns immediately started strong from the kickoff, hustling right to the ball and breaking up CCS’ attack. Offensively, the Longhorns took 5 shots on frame within the first 10 minutes of the second half to set the tone for the final push. The Longhorns finally were able to equalize the game on the scoreboard with a goal by senior Pat Smith on a pass from sophomore Jason Straffen. With less than 15 minutes left in the game, the Longhorns got off a flurry of shots, but none would find the back of the net. Finally with 10 minutes left, senior captain Tim Coulter scored off of a pass from junior Taylor Neumann putting West up 3-2. The Longhorns held CCS off the rest of the game to get the win.

“Playing 80 minutes is essential,” said Hubeler to the team. “The first half was a little shaky, but you came out with dominance and intensity in the second half to get the win. I like the heart and hustle.”
