Women's Basketball Thrives in 2015-2016 Season

In November, the Lutheran West community was excited to see how the women’s basketball season would unfold. With high expectations, the women set out to make it a successful season. Three months later, the team has proven itself.

The team currently boasts a record of 16-5 and placed second in the Patriot Athletic Conference. Senior Abby DeSimpelare stated in an interview, “We have won a lot of tough games and also fallen to some great opponents. . . We took second this year and it was a blast.”

During the 2015-2016 season, it became apparent that every single member of the team is an asset.  “The coolest part about our team is that we don't have one girl that is a standout,” DeSimpelare explained, “Each game someone else scores or plays the game of their life. It's just really cool to have so many good kids be a threat on the court.”

In addition to competitiveness and talent, much of the women’s success is due largely to the fact that they obtained the unique ability to come together as one team on the court. The team is able to connect in such a way that makes them unstoppable on the court, especially in its defense. “Our team defense was a direct result of the communication and team-mentality we have had all year,” stated DeSimpelare.

The success has not come without obstacles. Twice in the season, senior Maddie Thomas was unable to play due to a shoulder injury. She has been an asset to the team, so this was a difficult loss. However, the team has pulled itself together and come out strong.

On February 17th, the team won its first game in the Sectional tournament against Independence. Now, they are focusing their efforts on Saturday’s home game against Warrensville Heights at 1:00 P.M. If the Longhorns win this, they will move ahead to the District tournament.
