Senior Christopher VanHimbergen Named National Merit Finalist

Jessica Miller | Thursday, April 4, 2019

Chris_VanHimbergen-(1).jpegWe are proud to announce that current Lutheran West senior Christopher VanHimbergen has been named a National Merit Finalist through the National Merit Scholarship Competition. To be considered in the National Merit Scholarship Competition requires a great amount of hard work, dedication, and determination. National Merit Scholarship finalists are among the top academic performers in the country. Approximately 1.6 million high school juniors take the PSAT exam each year. On average, 16,000 of them achieve a score that qualifies them as a National Merit semi-finalist -- which translates to about 1% of students taking this exam. Semi-finalists must fulfill requirements including the completion of an application, maintenance of a consistently superior academic record, writing of a meaningful essay, acquiring the endorsement and recommendation of a school official, and taking the SAT with a resulting score that confirms the student's PSAT/NMSQT performance.

During his time at Lutheran West, Christopher has demonstrated that he is truly deserving of the title of National Merit Finalist. His dedication to his academic pursuits has been an inspiration to his peers and to the faculty. Aside from his high achievements in the classroom and on his standardized tests, Christopher has been an active member of The Senney Honors Academy, Lutheran West's cross-country and track teams, and Boy Scouts. Christopher says he has not officially decided where he will attend college after graduating in May, but he plans to major in the field of economics and then further his education in law school, eventually fulfilling his dream of becoming a lawyer.

When asked how he plans to continue with the academic tenacity he has developed in his high school years, Chris said, "I'll always try to do my best. I surround myself with great friends because I believe that -- generally speaking -- a person is the average of the 10 people that they spend the most time with. I pick those people very carefully, and they keep me hard-working, honest, caring, and most importantly, happy."

On behalf of the Lutheran West community, congratulations to Chris and his family on this achievement!
