Randy Behm is the 29th Recipient of the Outstanding Lutheran School Leadership Award

Staff Reports | Thursday, February 9, 2017
Randy Behm was recently named as the 29th recipient of the Outstanding Lutheran School Leadership Award given by CLEEF (Cleveland Lutheran Education Endowment Fund.)  “This prestigious award was established to honor and show appreciation to individuals who have provided a history of leadership in the establishment and development of Lutheran education in our Cleveland community”.  The reasons for Randy's nomination are clear.
Randy exemplifies one who has used his time and talents to further the success and the outreach of our Lutheran schools.  Beginning in the 1980's, Randy served on the Finance Committee for nearly three years and the CLEEF Board for one year.  As one of the original Lutheran West Operating Board members, he served for 4 years as their president.  He was on the Board of Directors for the CLHSA with six of his eleven years as president.  Currently, Randy continues his passion for Lutheran education as a member of the Lutheran East Operating Board and the Finance Committee, both since 2012.  If that didn’t keep him busy enough, in 2016, he added being a member of the newly formed LW Benefits Committee.  Outside of the Lutheran High Schools, Randy is a member of the Lakewood Lutheran School Board (10 Years) and has served as treasurer for the past 6 years.  Pastor Wallace is grateful for Randy's advice as a Leadership Team/Church Council member at Gethsemane, while serving as their treasurer.
Randy's introduction to the Cleveland Lutheran Schools occurred when he married Rev. Uffelman's daughter, Cheryl (class of 1971.) They have been married for 32 years and for every month he has flowers delivered to Cheryl on their anniversary date, the 26th.  The Behm's two sons are graduates of West as well.  David (‘04) is a LCMS pastor in Morris Plains, NJ.  Jon (‘07) is the sports editor for the Morning Journal, in Lorain, which regularly features LW athletics.  Jon and his wife, Ashley, welcomed their first son, Barrett Gunner, in November of 2016, much to the delight of Grandpa and Grandma Behm.
Since earning his degrees (BA at Lawrence University, WI and his Master's Degree in finance and operations research at the University of Michigan's Graduate School of Business), Randy has had his hand in education financing. From his early days at Key Bank, Randy has been instrumental in developing relevant programs to finance student loans.  Not only were Key Bank's $9 Billion in loans administered by him but he also created and managed the first public securities backed by education loans.  Holding the position of Executive Vice President of Private Loans for Student Loan Xpress, he managed all aspects of private education loan business for five years. The betterment of Liberty Bank was Randy's focus beginning in 2007 as their Senior Vice President and Director of Consumer Lending.
In 2010, Randy and his business partner started Education Solution Partners, LLC (ESP).  With Randy serving as Principal and process-improvement guru, ESP enhances national companies' loan programs and portfolios.  Their expertise ranges from one-time reviews to the advancement of entire client organizations
After Randy received CLEEF's award, he was given time to speak.  Making the most of his time, again, he encouraged the guests at the Christmas Brunch to “speak to just one person each day about Lutheran education”.  Our schools would be bursting at the seams if we all took this advice to heart!  The CLHSA has been richly blessed by the Behm family and the entire family has been greatly used by our Lord!
