Mike Waugh Named Principal Starting in June 2018

Staff Reports | Monday, November 20, 2017
Michael Waugh (class of 2002) was formally announced as the next Principal of Lutheran West for the next school year (2018-19).

In a letter to the Lutheran community, Superintendent and CEO of the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association (CLHSA) Marty Uhle explained why Waugh was chosen.  “His philosophy of education, experience in Lutheran secondary schools in Cleveland and Milwaukee, as well as multiple advanced degrees, has distinguished Mike as Lutheran West’s preferred candidate for this position of influence and authority within the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association.”

Waugh began his career as a teacher at Lutheran West and was instrumental in the implementation of The Senney Honors Academy, serving as Dean in addition to his teaching duties.  His career took him to Milwaukee Lutheran High School where he served as the Assistant Principal of Academics and head of curriculum.  His tenure at Milwaukee Lutheran will span three years of valuable new experiences before his return to LW in 2018.

Waugh is a 2002 graduate of Lutheran West, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics at Valparaiso University, his Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University, and recently completed his Master of Business Administration degree from Grand Canyon University.  Mike and his wife Jamie, Lutheran West class of 2002, and their children Lucas and Sydney will be returning to Cleveland in time for him to begin his new position in June of 2018.

Mr. Waugh follows current Principal Dale Wolfgram who will be retiring at the end of the school year.  Mr. Wolfgram is a dedicated Christian leader who will be completing ten years at Lutheran West. “We are grateful for his service,” wrote Uhle in his letter to the community. “We are grateful for his service and look forward to celebrating his career and time with us as the school year comes to an end.”

“The CLHSA is well positioned of the future with expanding enrollment, new sources of funding for students, strong Church partners for our ministry, and a dedicated teaching staff,” continued Uhle in his letter.  “The challenges of maintaining a growing Christ-centered schools at Lutheran East and Lutheran West in these changing times require dynamic leadership.  We feel that Mr. Waugh and Principal Chris Steinmann at Lutheran East will be excellent leaders at this time in our history.

“Thank you to all who continue to support our ministry at the CLHSA.  We will be celebrating our 70th year in 2018 and look forward to many more to come.”
