Jeff Schaef to Take Over Volleyball Program

Ryan Miller | Monday, February 13, 2017
Lutheran West has hired Jeff Schaef to take over as Head Coach and Program Director for Volleyball. Schaef was most recently the Head Varsity Coach for Lakewood High School from 2012-2015 compiling 49 wins. Before taking the reigns as the Varsity Coach at Lakewood he served as the Freshman and Junior Varsity Coach. In 2011 Schaef was part of the Lakewood staff who was awarded the NOC Coaching Staff of the Year. He has served as the Assistant Club Director for Quicksilver Volleyball Club and has 16 years experience as a head coach at the Junior Olympic level including both Regional and American levels. Schaef comes to Lutheran West with 30 years playing experience at the USAV AA/Open level for both indoor and beach doubles. In his coaching tenure he has worked with over 40 players who have advanced to NCAA DI, DII, DIII, NAIA and NJCAA collegiate levels.

Schaef will be bringing on Kris Pesorda to be the Lutheran West Varsity Assistant. Pesorda served as the middle hitter for Keystone High School in the mid 90’s. She went on to play four years for NCAA DI Bowling Green. Pesorda was the Assistant Women’s Coach at Bowling Green in 2000 and 2001. She also served as the Head Coach of the Bowling Green Men’s Club team from 1999-2002 leading the team to a 9th place finish at Nationals in Reno, Nevada. In 2002 and 2003 she was the Assistant Men’s and Women’s coach at the University of Findlay. Pesorda has also served as the Freshman coach at Sylvania Northview in 2003 as well as the Varsity Assistant at Lakewood from 2012-2015.

“It’s an honor to be a part of the Lutheran West family," said Coach Schaef. "I’m excited to get started. Coach Rivera has done an incredible job building a solid program over the years; and I plan on building that legacy even further. I’m looking forward to continuing thewinning tradition of Lutheran West volleyball for years to come as well as continuing to develop student-athletes in all aspects of their lives.”

Schaef will be taking over a program on the heels of a successful 2016 campaign with a 21-2 record and a second place District Finish. Lutheran West returns eight Varsity players for 2017 as they look to defend their PAC-12 title.

“Through the interview process Jeff Schaef separated himself through his communication skills and vision for Lutheran West Volleyball," commented Ryan Miller, Lutheran West's Athletic Director. "He understands who we are as a school and our mission to provide the best possible experience for our student-athletes in a positive Christian environment. His attention to detail and commitment to striving to develop Volleyball players as well as young women will be an asset to not only our Athletic Program but the school in general.”
