3rd Annual Cornhole Tournament Raises $1,420 Toward Scholarships

Staff Reports | Monday, October 8, 2018
Twenty teams competed in two divisions at the 3rd Annual Roger Benavides Memorial Scholarship Cornhole Tournament prior to Friday's Homecoming football game.

Coach_Roger_BenavidesCoach Roger Benavides (1969-2011) was a major influence in the development of the Lutheran West youth and junior high wrestling programs and was the assistant high school coach from 1996-1999. A college scholarship, which is awarded to Lutheran West senior wrestlers who have participated in the Minihorn, Shorthorn, and Longhorn wrestling teams every season since their fourth grade year, has been established in honor of Coach Benavides. "We would like to grow this scholarship over the years to be able to award more wrestlers larger amounts of scholarship money," stated Coach Ressler.

This year, $1,420 was raised for the college scholarship fund, which will be awarded in college scholarship funding to qualified Lutheran West wrestlers who have wrestled in the program since at least their fourth grade year.

Taking first in the student division was Team Tyler (sophomore Tyler Student_ChampionsDeSimpelare and junior Tyler Robinson). Placing second were future Longhorns Danny Tome (Shorthorn wrestler) and Evan Kromer (Minihorn wrestler). Placing third was Team Broken Bunch, made up of juniors Emma Poole and Grace Capretta. Seniors Chris and Kara VanHimbergen placed fourth.

The adult division had 15 total Adult_Championsteams and the competition was close all afternoon. The tournament's defending champions, LW alumni Nate and Sam Stover, were able to squeeze out several victories to claim the title for a second straight year. Placing second and giving the champions a fierce battle were LW alumni Mark Petro and Steve Swidrak. Lutheran West wrestling alumus Ray Kashubeck and his teammate Jorge Ramos placed third. Placing fourth was Lon Wise and his grandson Chase.

Lutheran West wrestling alumus Brian LaPointe was the winner of the custom-created Cleveland Browns cornhole set generously donated by Mr. Ed Deblock. LW alumna Lisa (Knall) Buck won the Cleveland Skyline Art donated by Mr. Brandon Krek.

Coach Dave Ressler and the Lutheran West wrestling team would like to thank everyone who participated in the tournament and those who donated to the scholarship fund. Thank you to the following sponsors: Pipefitters Local #120, BabySwede LLC, Quality Trophies and Awards, American Roofing, Keller Williams - Stacy Watson Realtor, The Winslow Family, Modern Chiropractic & Wellness,Torched - Brandon Krek, The Deblock Family, Network Marketing Success Club - Jeff Manco, and Statement Limousine.
